WHAT TO DO IN AN AIRPORT

Spending time in an airport is probably one of my favourite and least favourite thing to do. It absolutely sucks when you have to wait for hours and hours, but it can be quite exciting if you’re spending between 1 or 2 hours to wait. There are times when I am happy just staring into the blank, and then there are other times where I would give my right kidney to take the boredom away, I mean Angelo and I can only play “Thumb wars” so many times.

I’m going to start with telling you about the things NOT to do in an airport.

DON’T BUY FOOD

Honestly, food in an airport is always crazy expensive, and usually there isn’t a lot to taste by means of food tourism, so Angelo and I usually either bring snacks, or hold out until we get to eat on the plane.

DON’T BUY SOUVENIRS

By all means stroll around the shops, and use your time by looking at all the bright and wonderful things, but please, do not buy souvenirs at an airport. I mean, obviously unless you really really have to, but usually those little shops are incredibly over priced, and the objects are usually “made in China” not by locals.

I have a couple of tricks to help you beat the boredom. Naturally, I’m not exactly an expert at this, so if you have any tips you can share with me, that would be the best!

  • PEOPLE WATCHING WITH VOICE-OVERS

This sounds so incredibly childish, and lets be honest, it is. We watch people, and create voices for them and where they are going. Some people are just crazy, and especially in an airport, people watching is by FAAAR the best thing to do.

  • COME WITH GAMES PREPARED

I always carry a pen and paper with me, most times. So with that in mind, there is usually some game that we can play, Hangman or Naughts and Crosses. Easy to play and it takes up the time. I SPY is also a cool game to play that you don’t need a pen and paper for.

  • DARE EACH OTHER

This is something so silly, but so much fun to play. No one cares what you do in an airport, for all you know people have been awake for more than 28 hours. I’ve seen people walking around literally half asleep in their pajamas. Literally no one cares, and no one is going to remember you anyway. Angelo and I like to dare one another to do things, it keeps us awake, and laughing, and as an added extra hopefully it makes other people laugh too!

  • CATCH UP ON EMAILS / SKYPE CALLS / MESSAGES

I find that very rarely in this day and age do we actually have time to sit and focus on one thing at a time. While we are waiting at an airport their isn’t usually much to do, so I use the time to catch up on emails, work messages, or just to message someone I haven’t spoken to in a while. It’s a great way to use your time constructively.

With all this being said and done, what we usually do is grab something to eat, have a coffee and wonder around the shops a bit. One of our all time favourite things to do is try on THE MOST EXPENSIVE PERFUME, mostly because we won’t get another chance to wear it, and… well… we usually stink a little bit. WIN.

Although most of the time airports can be a bit of a drag, for me the best thing about travelling is actually the travelling, so I try to make the most out of ever form of transport that I can. Airports can be a little door, or window into the country that you are going to visit, so you might as well make the most of it while you are there. You have nothing else to do anyway.
